Porque no pude detenerme ante la muerte,
amablemente ella se detuvo ante mí;
el carruaje solo nos encerraba a nosotros
y a la inmortalidad.

Condujimos lentamente, ella no sabe de apuros;
y por su cortesía debí abandonar mis labores e incluso mis ratos de ocio.

Pasamos por la escuela donde jugaban los niños
Sus lecciones apenas concluidas;
pasamos frente a los campos de pastoreo
y ante el sol que se ponía,

Nos detuvimos ante una casa que parecía una hinchazón de la tierra;
su techo, solo visible,
su cornisa, apenas un montículo.

Desde entonces han pasado siglos;
pero cada uno parece más corto
que el día en que anuncié por vez primera que las cabezas de los caballos
apuntaban hacia la eternidad.

The Carriage held but just Ourselves–
And Immortality.

We slowly drove– He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility–

We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess– in the Ring–
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain–
We passed the Setting Sun–

Or rather– He passed Us–
The Dews drew quivering and Chill–
For only Gossamer, my Gown–
My Tippet– only Tulle–

We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground–
The Roof was scarcely visible–
The Cornice– in the Ground–

Since then– 'tis Centuries– and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity–
